In its inaugural year, the University of Queensland Surgical Interest Group (UQSIG) will implement one of its cornerstone initiatives, a Mentoring Program. This will provide an excellent opportunity for University of Queensland medical students to connect with physicians in the field of surgery, who can provide guidance and advice throughout their studies.
Surgeons, surgical registrars and interns (particularly those with surgical aspirations) are encouraged to sign up to be a mentor.
We believe the success of any mentor program relies heavily on the enthusiasm of both mentor and mentee. In terms of expectations, we hope mentors are able to:
- Meet periodically with their mentee, preferably on a monthly basis;
- Be available via email or phone to answer any questions the mentee may have in relation to their studies, particularly questions relating to the field of surgery and research;
- Attend, pending other commitments, any UQSIG mentoring or networking events; and
- Involve their mentees in their surgical work
