Speaker Profiles: Surgical Specialties Evening

Announcing the speakers and presenters on our expert panel at the Surgical Specialties Information Evening.

Our flagship seminar, the 7th Surgical Specialties Information Evening is just around the corner on the Tuesday, 7th October at Hawken Engineering (50) – T203. We hope you’re as excited to rub shoulders with the following consultants on our expert panel.

Dr Sarah Byrne MBBS is a general surgery registrar in her third year training. She is representing the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and will be sharing with us her experiences in the entry criteria, entrance examinations, and training for surgery.

A/Prof Julie Mundy MBBS MBA FRACS is a specialist Cardiothoracic Surgeon and the Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit at the Princess Alexandria Hospital. She is also a Member of the Board of Cardiothoracic Surgery and an Executive Member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons.

A/Prof Owen Ung MBBS FRACS is a breast and endocrine surgeon, head of the Breast and Endocrine Unit, Director of the Centre for Breast Health the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RWBH), and academic in the school of medicine University of Queensland. He is a visiting surgeon at BreastScreen, Wesley Private and St Andrews War Memorial Hospitals.

Dr John North MBBS FRACS FAOrthA is a senior orthopaedic surgeon at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. He is a past President of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, and is the Clinical Director of the Queensland Audit of Surgical Mortality and the Northern Territory Audit of Surgical Mortality.

Dr Bernard Whitfield MBBS FRACS is a Senior Specialist Otolaryngologist and Head and Neck surgeon. He operates at the Princess Alexandra and Logan Hospitals. Dr Whitfield is the current Chairman of RACS Queensland, and he is also an Independent Hospital Pricing Authority Clinical Advisor and a member of the Queensland Clinical Senate.

Dr Fatima Ashrafi MBBS DGO (Dub) FRCS (Edin) FRCOG (Lon) FRANZCOG is an experienced and highly qualified Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. She has worked in Bangladesh, Iran, Scotland, England and New Zealand before settling in Australia. She has been a staff specialist in Queensland since 2006 and now works for the Royal Flying Obstetrics and Gynaecology Services. She is also an examiner for the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and RANZCOG. She is also a UQ Senior Lecturer.

Dr Nicholas Boyne MBBS FRACS is a specialist Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon.  He operates at the Royal Brisbane as well as Wesley Hospitals. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the current Chair of the Board of Vascular Surgical Training and an Executive Member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Vascular Surgery.

Prof Roy Kimble MD(Research UQ), MBChB, FRCS, FRACS (Paed Surg) is a consultant Paediatric Surgeon & Urologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital. He is the Director of Paediatric Burns & Trauma (State Network), the Clinical Lead of Paediatric Vascular Anomalies, Director of the Centre for Children’s Burns & Trauma Research and Professor of Paediatrics & Child Health at UQ.

Dr Lily Vrtik MBBS FRACS is a specialist Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon with experience  in trauma, burns and cancer reconstructive surgery. She has public appointments at the Mater Adult as well as Princess Alexandria Hospitals and has her own private practice at Everton Park and Sunnybank.
