The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Queensland Committee, in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, hosted the inaugural Queensland Surgical Skills Competition on 19th October 2013. The competition was held at the RACS Queensland office, and was supported by Johnson&Johnson Medical and Odyssey Specialist Group.
A total of 20 students in their first year of clinical placements participated from the University of Queensland, Griffith University and Bond University. The students rotated through five stations: knot tying, suturing, cyst removal, laparoscopy and anatomy.
Students had 15 minutes at each station to demonstrate their skills and were marked by Queensland Surgeons.
UQ won the prize for Best Medical School, with Griffith placing second and Bond coming third. The prize for top cumulative scores in the four surgical skills stations was awarded to Darius Ashrafi (UQ) and Justin Kelly (Griffith). The prize for top mark in anatomy was awarded to Kelvin Ho (UQ).
